The Sawmill Shootout 1999 - Logosol enters the scene
This
was the first time a chainsaw mill was competing with bandsaws, many
at a price 10 times as high!
Most of the sawmills at the competition were bandsaws, the cheapest cost
double the Logosol. Logosol participaded with the Logosol M5, an earlier
version of the now popular M7.
Champions league
12 of the world’s top portable sawmills was there. Saturday
afternoon, May 15, Logosol was right in the middle of the battle, going
head to head with portable band saws costing thousands of dollars more
than the Logosol Swedish Mill. Rob and Martin cut 182 board feet of lumber
per hour, beating some of the bandsaw mills!
They didn't take home the title to this shootout challenge, but, they
certainly showed what the Swedish Mill can do. They chose some of the
worst logs that were on the competition pile, logs that other competitors
ignored, to show the versatility of the Swedish Mill. This was a 6.6 hp
chainsaw mill going against other mills that were running up to 40 hp
diesel engines.
Logosol
Crew Volunteers for Ugly Wood
Rob explains that at the 1st Annual Great Portable Sawmill Shootout,
pre-contest meeting, there was one log that no one wanted to take. The
contest sponsors had only so many logs and one of them was particularly
bad. Rather than assign it to someone, they asked for volunteers to take
it. Rob raised his hand, and volunteered for the log. However, instead
of one bad log, they got 4 "ugly" logs.
Result: 182 BF/HR
Logosol produced 182 BF/HR and the winning $31.000 Wood-Mizer 725 BF/HR.
If the price of the Logosol was divided with the cost of purchase, the
Logosol value is $14/BF/HR and WoodMizer $42/BF/HR.
Martin, in his interview with Sawmill and Woodlot Management Magazine,
explains that the Swedish Mill is there to show how easy it is to produce
quality lumber without having to make a huge investment in equipment.
As you can see from the charts on the next page, the Swedish Mill would
win if the competition were for the lowest price sawmill. Plus, you don't
need a $30,000 vehicle to transport it.
Not
only did the Swedish Mill beat some of the other mills on the time it
took to saw the logs, all of the 1" boards it produced were accepted
by the certified lumber grader. The Sawmills had to produce lumber of
a correct size and dimension in order for the planks to be counted in
the total score.
Our two Sawmill Shootout competitors were Rob Bjorklund and Martin
Hall. They are really excited about the results, and immediately started
to make plans for the next competition!
