Logosol Team cuts 194 Board Feet per hour in Shootout II Competition 2001
Swedish
Mill owner Robert Seidell, of Michigan, took Logosol to a new record
in the Great Portable Sawmill Shootout II in Springfield, Mass. Robert
and Rob, Logosol Factory Rep. for the US, put in a great performance as
they competed in the second heat of the day against the biggest band mills
in the shootout.
15 sawmills on the field
The field was a little more crowded than last year with 15 mills competing
for the fastest portable sawmill title. Preliminary results show that
Logosol placed 14th out of the field of 15. The Logosol team had to contend
with bigger logs this year and a longer sawing time. They had a draw of
logs that were "pretty good" according to Rob. They had two
hours to cut the group of logs, and finished in 1 hour and 42 minutes.
This calculated out at a rate of 194 Board Feet per hour.
Working with 25" bar
"We had some pretty big logs," Robert said. "The 25"
bar would barely reach through a couple of them!" Robert said things
went pretty smooth for the team, although he noted that he picked up the
wrong 25 inch chain at one point. He had meant to get a fresh chain, and
got one that had already been used. "The 200 mark could have been
broken if we had cut that big log with a fresh chain!" he noted.
Still he was very enthusiastic about the team's showing. "This was
great fun," he said. "And that's the main thing," he added.
Rob said the lightweight Swedish Mill had one of the fastest setup times.
This year they counted setup time separately from sawing time, and no
points were given for setup time. "We were setup in a minute and
45 seconds, " Rob noted. "Some mills took up to nineteen minutes!"
He said taking this time out worked against the Swedish Mill's scoring
time, in that they would have been cutting while the others were setting
up. "But it was a great show," he exclaimed! "The Swedish
Mill came through for us! We shattered our last year's record!"
New record: 194 BF/HR
The top scoring mill put in a performance of 803 BF/HR. This is 78 BF/HR
over the record of last year. Logosol improved their score by 12 BF/HR,
having cut 182 BF/HR last year. The range of scoring was from 803 BF/HR.
to 110 BF/HR. One big band mill popped a band during the heat and they
were through for the day at that point, though they still had a respectable
score - they were just not able to finish edging.
The Swedish Mill placed close to a number of band mills. The last 7 mills
had scores that ranged from 244 - 110 BF/HR. Logosol was just under 4
of the band mills in BF/HR.
"There was a lot of pitch in this wood," Robert noted. He said
the sawdust would sting you if it got on you. So they were ready to head
for the showers, especially after cutting over 325 BF/HR in under 2 hours.
